Gate keypads, intercoms and access control: what to know

Short answer

Access controls are the remotes, keypads, intercoms and phone apps that open your gate. They must be mounted at least 6 feet from moving parts. Fixr puts keypads at $400 to $800 and intercoms at $1,000 to $7,000; HomeAdvisor's ranges are lower. Sources: DASMA TDS 356, Fixr, HomeAdvisor.

Types

  • Remotes: typical range 50 to 100 feet from inside a car, 100 to 150 feet outside (Apollo).
  • Keypads and push buttons.
  • Intercoms.
  • Phone apps such as myQ. LiftMaster lists myQ codes like 223 and 309 (gateway offline) and 304 (device not connected) (LiftMaster troubleshooting guide).

Placement rule

Controls must be at least 6 feet from any moving part of the gate, so nobody reaches over, under, through or around it (DASMA TDS 356, DASMA gate systems safety brochure (Nov 24).
