Gate won't open? Power, battery and remote checks
Most gates that will not open have a power problem: a tripped breaker, a blown fuse, a weak battery or a dead remote battery. Check the breaker, try a second remote or the keypad, and replace the remote battery. If it still does nothing, or a breaker keeps tripping, call a gate company. Sources: Angi, Elite Gates.
Likely causes
- No power: a tripped breaker or a blown fuse. Angi notes gate failures are usually power related.
- A dead or weak gate battery. Many DC openers run on a 12V battery, and below about 12V the unit may reset or stop (Ghost Controls).
- A dead remote battery, or a remote that lost its programming.
- A faulty receiver or sensor.
Safe checks you can do
- Check that the house circuit has power and the breaker is on.
- Try a second remote or the keypad. If one works, the first remote is the problem.
- Replace the remote battery.
- For a solar opener: is the panel dirty or shaded? Clean it with mild soap and water and keep water off the wiring (Mighty Mule gate opener maintenance guide).
When to call a gate company
- Power and remotes are fine and the gate still does nothing.
- A breaker keeps tripping (Elite Gates advises a professional).
- The control board shows an error code. LiftMaster owners can look it up on our LiftMaster codes page.
Need to get a car out now? Swing and slide gates can be moved by hand in a power cut: turn the power off, release the operator with its key or lever, then reconnect and restore power afterwards. Follow your opener manual (Apollo, LiftMaster LA400DC owner's manual).

Quick answers
Why won't my electric gate open?
Usually power: a tripped breaker, a blown fuse, a weak gate battery or a dead remote battery (Angi, Elite Gates). Check those first.
Why does my gate do nothing when I press the remote?
Try a second remote or the keypad. If they work, replace the first remote's battery. If nothing works, check power and the gate battery.
Can a dead battery stop an automatic gate?
Yes. Many DC openers run on a 12V battery and may reset or stop below about 12V (Ghost Controls).
Should I reset my gate opener myself?
Stop at safe checks like the breaker, remotes and remote batteries. Opening the control box, wiring and settings are a job for a gate technician.
How much does it cost to fix a gate that won't open?
Angi lists $80 to $280 for a dead gate battery and $50 to $300 for a broken remote (national ranges, Feb 20, 2024).
