Solar and battery gate openers: why they stop
Many DC openers run on a 12V battery charged by a transformer or a solar panel, and below about 12V the unit may reset or stop. Most solar and battery problems come down to an old battery, a dirty or shaded panel, or a charging fault. Batteries last about 2 to 3 years. The 12V rule
Ghost Controls says its system needs more than 12V under load to run (Ghost Controls). Mighty Mule's MM360 sounds a low battery alarm when the battery is below about 11.5V at idle, or below about 10V while running (Mighty Mule MM360 installation manual).
Signs of a low battery
- The gate moves slowly, stops, or reverses.
- Mighty Mule MM360: 5 beeps every 2 seconds.
- LiftMaster: codes 40 to 42 point to a battery or charging problem (LiftMaster troubleshooting guide).
- The gate works in the afternoon but not in the morning.
Safe checks you can do
- Clean the solar panel with mild soap and water, and keep water off the wiring (Mighty Mule gate opener maintenance guide).
- Check that the panel is not shaded by trees or a new structure.
- Note the age of the battery.
How long batteries last
- Mighty Mule: replace every 2 to 3 years, or sooner if it leaks or corrodes (Mighty Mule gate opener maintenance guide).
- LiftMaster: every 3 years; batteries degrade with temperature and use (LiftMaster RSL12V manual).
When to call a gate company
- A new battery does not fix it.
- You suspect the charger, transformer or wiring.
- The panel or its cable is damaged.
