How to check a gate company before you hire

Short answer

In California and Arizona, a contractor license is needed for jobs of $1,000 or more in labor and materials, or any job that needs a permit. Florida has no state gate license, but Miami-Dade requires a county or state license for fencing permits. Look the company up in the official registry yourself, and get a written quote. Sources: CSLB press release on AB 2622 ($1, Arizona Commerce Authority, Miami-Dade County.

California

  • A CSLB license is needed for jobs of $1,000 or more (labor and materials), or any job that needs a permit or hires workers. The threshold rose from $500 on January 1, 2025 (CSLB press release on AB 2622 ($1).
  • The CSLB class for gates is D-28 "Doors, Gates and Activating Devices" (CSLB). Some companies hold other classes that may also cover parts of the work.
  • Look up the license on the CSLB website: check it is active and the name and address match.

Arizona

  • An ROC license is needed for work of $1,000 or more in labor and materials, or if a permit is required (Arizona Commerce Authority).
  • Unlicensed handymen must say "not a licensed contractor" in their ads (Arizona Commerce Authority).
  • Look up the license on the Arizona ROC website: active, name and address match.

Florida: Miami-Dade and Broward

  • Florida has no state license class for gates.
  • Miami-Dade: fences and gates need a permit, and contractors "must be licensed by Miami-Dade County or the State of Florida to perform fencing work" (Miami-Dade County).
  • Broward still issues certain local certificates, such as fence erection and garage door (Broward County).
  • Gate operator wiring may fall under state electrical licenses.
  • Cities inside Miami-Dade run their own building departments, so check with your city.

Your checklist

  • Look the company up yourself in the official registry for your state or county.
  • Ask for a written quote that names the parts and the labor.
  • Ask whether a permit is needed and who pulls it.
  • Ask about training. IDEA offers Gate Operator Installer, Gate Systems Designer and Gate Technician levels 1 to 3 (DASMA / IDEA gate certifications (Summer 2024)).
  • Ask the installer to show that the gate stops and reverses when it meets an object (DASMA gate systems safety brochure (Nov 24).
  • Read the company's own reviews on Google.

Gate Repair USA lists active registered businesses and shows a license only after we confirm it in the official registry. We do not rate companies. Always check for yourself before you hire.
