Gate opener and operator repair

The operator is the box that does the work, and it is where most gate faults actually live. Boards, capacitors, limit switches, receivers and drive gears, across every major brand.

What we repair

The gate is rarely the problem

When a driveway gate stops behaving, the gate itself is usually fine. The fault is almost always inside the operator: a control board that took a surge, a capacitor that has lost capacity, a limit switch knocked out of position, or a receiver that has stopped hearing the remote.

That matters because operators are repairable. A board is a part. A capacitor is a cheap part. Being told the whole unit needs replacing when one component failed is the single most common way people overpay for gate work.

Signs the operator is the fault

  • The remote does nothing, but the wall button or keypad still works
  • The motor hums or runs, but the gate does not move
  • The gate opens fully but will not close, or the reverse
  • It works intermittently, often worse in heat or after rain
  • The gate stops partway and reverses for no visible reason
  • There is a flashing LED or blink code on the control board
Diagnosis

What usually turns out to be wrong

Roughly in the order we find them. The first three account for most calls.

CauseWhat you noticeUsual fix
Control board failureDead unit, erratic behavior, or a flashing diagnostic LED. Often follows a storm.$300 to $700
Failed start capacitorMotor hums but will not turn, or needs a nudge to start moving.$150 to $300
Limit switch out of positionGate stops short, overtravels, or slams into the stop.$180 to $350
Receiver or remote faultRemote dead but keypad fine, or range has dropped to a few feet.$150 to $400
Worn drive gear or nutGrinding noise, motor turning freely without moving the gate.$250 to $600
Low battery or charge fault (solar)Works in daylight, dies at night, or slows badly over a few days.$180 to $450
Blown fuse or tripped breakerNo power at all, no lights on the board.$150 to $250

How the visit runs

What actually happens when we arrive

Power and safety check

Breaker, fuse, transformer and battery voltage before anything else. A surprising number of calls end here.

Operator diagnosis

Board LEDs, blink codes, capacitor test, limit positions, receiver signal and drive train condition.

Written quote

Cause, part, price and time, given before any work begins. If you decline, you owe nothing for the diagnosis.

Repair and safety test

Fit the part, reset limits, then a full entrapment test against UL 325 before we leave.

Why we publish ranges instead of one number

A single headline price is either a bait figure or a guess. The operator, the parts and the access all move the total, so we give the range here and the exact figure in writing on site before anyone starts. The full cost guide breaks down what pushes a job to the top of each range.

Common questions

Gate opener repair questions

Is it worth repairing an old operator?
Usually, yes. Operators from the last fifteen years are largely repairable, and parts for the common brands are still available. We recommend replacement when the repair cost approaches the price of a new unit, not before.
My remote stopped working. Is that the opener?
Not necessarily. Try the keypad or wall button first. If those work, the fault is in the remote or the receiver, which is one of the cheapest repairs on the list. If nothing works, it is more likely power or the board.
Do you carry parts on the truck?
Boards, capacitors, limit switches, receivers and common gears for the major brands, yes. That is why most repairs finish on the first visit rather than becoming a return trip and a second invoice.
The gate worked yesterday and not today. What changed?
In order of likelihood: a tripped breaker, a dead solar battery, a photo eye knocked out of alignment, or storm damage to wiring. All four are inexpensive if that is what it turns out to be.
Can you service a brand that no longer exists?
Often. Discontinued operators can usually be kept running with equivalent components, and we tell you up front which parts are original and which are equivalents.

Describe what the operator is doing

Two minutes on the phone usually narrows it to one or two causes, which means we arrive with the right part rather than an appointment to come back.
