Home/Troubleshooting/Keypad not working

Your gate keypad has stopped working

Whether the keypad beeps when you press a key is the single most useful thing you can tell us, because it splits the fault into two completely different repairs.

A beeping keypad is usually not the broken part

Short answer

If the keypad beeps or lights up but the gate does not move, the keypad is probably fine. It has power and it is reading your input. The fault is downstream: the relay output, the wiring run back to the operator, or the operator's own input terminal. That is often a cheaper repair than a new keypad.

If the keypad is completely dead, unlit and silent, the problem is power to the keypad or the keypad hardware itself. On community systems there is a third possibility that catches people out: the code is genuinely no longer in the directory, because it was cleared during a resident update.

Causes

Why a gate keypad stops working

Split roughly evenly between the keypad, the wiring and the programming.

Try this first

Four checks before you call

None of these require opening the keypad or touching wiring.

  1. Listen for the beep

Press any key and listen. A beep or a light means the keypad has power and is working.

Silence and no light means power, and that is a different repair.

  2. Try a second code

On community systems, try a code you know belongs to somebody else, or a service code.

If another code works and yours does not, your code was cleared rather than the keypad failing.

  3. Test another input

Try the remote or the wall button. If those open the gate, the operator is healthy and the fault sits between the keypad and the operator.

If nothing works, the problem is the operator, not the keypad.

  4. Look at the faceplate

Check for water staining, cracked housing, insect nests behind the plate or corrosion at the edges. Outdoor keypads take a lot of weather.

Note anything you see, because it changes what we bring.

Do not open the keypad or the operator housing

Keypad wiring runs at low voltage but the operator it connects to does not. Opening the operator housing to trace a keypad fault puts you next to mains wiring and a machine that can start moving.

On community systems, do not reset the panel. A factory reset on a telephone entry system can clear the entire resident directory, turning a single keypad fault into a site-wide problem and a much larger invoice.

Common questions

Keypad questions

The keypad beeps but the gate does not open. Which part is broken?
Usually neither the keypad nor the operator, but the link between them: the relay output, the wiring run, or the operator input terminal. Cheaper than replacing either end.
My code stopped working but my neighbor's still does.
Your code was cleared or expired. On rental-heavy communities directories get updated regularly and individual codes get lost. That is a programming job, not a repair.
Can rain break a gate keypad?
Over time, yes. Outdoor keypads rely on a seal behind the faceplate, and once that fails moisture corrodes the contacts. Erratic or sticking buttons after wet weather is the usual first sign.
Can I add a keypad to a gate that does not have one?
In most cases, yes, either hardwired or wireless depending on the operator and the distance from the gate.
How long should an outdoor keypad last?
Five to ten years in a mild climate, less where it takes direct sun and driving rain all year.
