How to open an electric gate in a power cut

Short answer

Automatic swing and slide gates can be moved by hand when the power is out. Turn the power off, release the operator with its key or lever, and move the gate by hand. When power is back, re-engage the operator and restore power. If the release key is lost or the release will not work, call a gate company. Sources: Apollo, LiftMaster LA400DC owner's manual.

Steps

  • Turn the power to the operator off.
  • Use the release key or lever to disconnect the motor from the gate (LiftMaster LA400DC owner's manual).
  • Move the gate by hand, slowly, and keep people and pets clear.
  • When power is back: re-engage the operator, store the key somewhere you can find it, and restore power.

LiftMaster: "Always disconnect the batteries BEFORE servicing the operator." (LiftMaster RSL12V manual). Releasing the operator is fine; opening the control box is not. Never let children play with the gate or its controls (DASMA gate systems safety brochure (Nov 24).
