Electric gates during an LA power shutoff
Southern California Edison may cut power in a Public Safety Power Shutoff when strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity are forecast. In the City of LA, power-operated gates must open automatically on power failure, including battery backup, or be pushable without extra steps. At home, learn your manual release before a shutoff. What a PSPS is
A Public Safety Power Shutoff is when Southern California Edison turns power off ahead of strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity (Southern California Edison). Check SCE for alerts in your area.
The LAFD rule for gates
- Power-operated gates need an LAFD-approved override; a Knox two-position key switch is accepted.
- On power failure, including battery backup, the gate "shall automatically open", or be pushable without extra steps (LAFD Fire Prevention).
- Security gates are allowed only on private streets, access roads and fire lanes, not public streets (L.A.M.C. 57.503.4.2).
Before a shutoff
- Find the release key and practice the manual release once, with the power off (LiftMaster LA400DC owner's manual).
- Check the battery age: LiftMaster says replace every 3 years (LiftMaster RSL12V manual).
- Keep the release key indoors where you can find it.
During a shutoff
- Turn the power off first, release the operator with its key or lever, move the gate by hand, then re-engage the operator and restore power afterwards. Follow the manual for your model (Apollo, LiftMaster LA400DC owner's manual).
- Keep people and pets clear while you move the gate.
Call a gate company when
- The release will not disconnect the motor, or the key is lost.
- The gate does not work after power returns.
- You manage a gate on a private street and are not sure it meets the LAFD rule.
Quick answers
What happens to my electric gate in a power shutoff?
It stops unless it has battery backup. You can move most swing and slide gates by hand after releasing the operator (Apollo).
Do gates in Los Angeles have to open when the power fails?
For gates under the LAFD rule, yes: on power failure, including battery backup, the gate shall automatically open, or be pushable without extra steps (LAFD).
